The Gyeonggi Province Agricultural Research & Extension Services (Director Im Jae-uk) opened an international symposium on “Cultivating and Globalizing High-quality Roses, and Their Distribution Technology” at its premises.

The symposium, which focused on the distribution and maintenance of high-quality roses, was attended by over 150 participants including rose farmers, distributors, and related officials.

Director Philip Bays from Olijrozen Netherlands gave a presentation on “World Rose Distribution Systems and Advanced Preservation Techniques” at the symposium. Park Jae-hun, head of the export department of Daedong Nonghyup, spoke about “Systems for Exporting Roses to Japan and Sales Strategies.”

According to Director Philip Bays, some 1400ha of land are dedicated to the cultivation of roses in Europe, 6350ha in South America, 4000ha in Africa, and 3300ha in Asia. Seventy-five percent of all roses produced in South America are exported to the US, while 95% of those produced in Africa are exported to Europe, and 95% of all roses grown in Asia are exported to other Asian countries.22.jpg Images◇ Participants in the event admire the roses on display.  ⓒ G-News Plus

Director Park Jae-hun touched upon strategies for expanding rose exports to Japan, proposing the use of cultivating methods that reflect that nation’s export processes, stabilizing quality, and integrating the selection criteria.

The subject of Flower Wholesale Department Head Gwon Yeong-gyu’s presentation was “Methods of Expanding Korean Rose Distribution,” in which he mentioned a number of important issues. “We have to establish normalized quality criteria and low-temperature distribution systems. In terms of distribution, wholesale markets have to overhaul their facilities. I hope to see more large-scale production farms in Korea.” He also remarked that: “We must undertake more retail sales, and change the market perception of how roses are distributed to ensure their freshness. Flower consumption in general needs to become more widespread.”

Director Im Jae-uk emphasized that: “We have concentrated on domestic and international distribution quantities so far. But now we must shift our focus to implementing high-tech cultivation methods in order to increase production, and on cutting-edge distribution systems.”
