The Governor of Gyeonggi Province Kim Moon-soo invited author Lee Oi-soo to the “Gyeonggi & Youth Concert” this 23rd at the Gyeonggi Arts Center’s Small Theater.
The concert was staged to communicate with the emerging generation. Over five hundred people attended the event including the Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps from the first intake to the latest fifth intake, Gyeonggi Social Rockers, the winners of the Korea Student Advertising Competition, and the Gyeonggi Province Next Generation Commission.
The fourth intake of the Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps celebrated the end of their one-year activity. They reported their activities and screened the short videos produced by each division.
The video shorts were carefully picked to represent each division. During the ceremony, the Public Transportation Division was awarded the grand prize for their short video portraying Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps’ journalist Kim A-ra’s day out covering a topic. The gold prize went to Welfare Policy Division, while silver prizes were awarded to the Economy Division and the Balanced Development Division. The participation award was given to the Self-Governing Bureau and the DMZ Division.
The Welfare Division won the grand prize with their Dictionary Form of the Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps’ and the Balanced Development Division grabbed the audience’s attention by creating a video collage of Adolf Hitler accompanied by subtitles explaining the unbalanced development of the northern part of Gyeonggi Province.
The awards were given out after the screening of the videos. Governor Kim, during his speech at the award ceremony, said, “I enjoyed the videos very much. I can see how much effort goes into investigating and evaluating a situation before writing an article. I would like to thank the Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps for providing a new and witty perspective on what happens around us.”◇ The six award-winning division chiefs of the 4th Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps UCC Contest ⓒ G-News Plus / Heo Seon-ryang
After the ceremony for Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps’ activity, the event continued with its second part, titled Youth Never Loses, with author Lee Oi-soo. His witty anecdotes and a performance by the rock band Metal Case Project stole the show. “Cheolgabang Project” was originally supervised by late singer Lee Nam, while their lyrics were written by author Lee Oi-soo himself.
Author Lee Oi-soo touched the young audience with his sincerity. Lee said, “When a friend told me ‘You might make something of yourself one day,’ it prompted me to continue with what I was doing, which eventually changed my life. Writing must be honest if it is to move the audience. Knowledge comes from a clear mind. Sensitivity comes from the heart and soul.”
“Our goal is to be happy in life. Even those who take their lives do so because they feel they will be happier in the afterlife. It is unfortunate that none of us know how to become happy, but I know the first step to happiness is finding the right balance between mental and material wealth. Happiness is not proportionate with money, fame, and power.”◇ Author Lee Oi-soo’s lecture was followed by a performance by the rock band “Cheolgabang Project” ⓒ G-News Plus News / Heo Seon-ryang
The author continued, “Love is the answer. Love means adopting the same temperament as the one you love. The opposite will look beautiful in your eyes. Fall in love. Beauty is not always visual. We must learn how to see beyond that. You must let go of your greed to be whole. Become a mountain when you come across a mountain. Become a river when you come across a river. Become it and become part of it.”
The third portion of the “Gyeonggi & Youth Concert” was hosted by G News Plus announcer Im Pyeong-sun. Governor Kim and author Lee Oi-soo shared their experiences of overcoming adversity, and discussed their challenges, passions, and thoughts on the future with the audience. They also answered questions posed by seven panel members and selected by the 4th Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps. Some questions were submitted in writing on colored paper planes handed out earlier that day.
A plane “flown in” from Nam Hyeong-gwon said, “What does an empty manuscript paper mean to author Lee Oi-soo? Is there anything Governor Kim and author Lee would have done differently if they could change the past?”
Author Lee replied, “To me an empty page is a mirror that reflects the world.” His witty answer received a round of applause. Governor Kim said, “I regret not graduating school for another 24 years after my mother passed away. It was my mother’s dying wish.”
Again author Lee said, “I tend to regret everything I do. I am never content with my writing. That is why I envy old sayings. Their origins are never clear but they are still used in conversation because they can have so many meanings. I want to write something as profound as that.”
The last question they received was: “If you were to go back to your younger days what would you do?” Author Lee said, “I am very happy with my current life. I would never want to go back to that time. If I did, I would find a time machine to fly back to where I was.” The audience burst into laughter. Governor Kim said, “If I had the chance to go back, I would be a better son. I would spend more time with my parents. Men tend not to show their emotions. I would hope that young men can be more open and expressive of their emotions.” Tears welled up in his eyes as he spoke.
The Governor said in his speech, “I would like to thank the 4th intake of the Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps for their hard work and great articles. I hope you give good advice to the 5th intake of the Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps, who are just starting off. Whether you are a seasoned journalist or a newcomer, I hope the youth of this country will live passionately.”◇ Governor Kim Moon-soo and author Lee Oi-soo having a chat. ⓒ G-News Plus / Heo Seon-ryang◇ Members of Gyeonggi Province’s 4th Gyeonggi Province University Student Press Corps taking souvenir pictures with Governor Kim and author Lee. ⓒ G-News Plus / Heo Seon-ryang
