Gyeonggi Province decided to intensively foster fishery resources by injecting KRW 55 billion by 2016.

The Province established ‘Fishery Resources Management Plan’ and plans to constantly promote production environment of the fishery resources in 9 sectors so as to revive coastal ecosystem which has been deteriorated due to climate changes and to respond to FTA in an effective fashion.

With the goal of 20,000 tons of fishery production, the provincial office promotes the projects aimed at increasing the income of fishermen, marine ecosystem preservation project, environment improvement project, and foundation construction works for the management of marine resources at a cost of KRW 11.5 billion. Above all, it plans to create 139ha of artificial fishing banks (fish shelters) in the coastal fisheries to promote spawning and inhabiting environment for marine living resources.

In addition, it plans to release 17.523 million young fishes of 16 species including jacopevers and river puffers in order to restore resources ecosystem and build consistent production bases, and spread 127 tons of young shortneck clams to increase fishery resources.

To protect endemic species, it plans to remove a total of 122 tons of species including 82 tons of exotic fishes such as bass and bluegill and 40 tons of useless species, and build fishways in Suip Stream, Pocheon so that the ecosystem of the rivers and streams are restored and marine resources increase.

Gyeonggi Province plans to get rid of 67 tons of marine debris, 1146 tons of wastes in the coasts, and 142 tons of starfishes, and remove waste fish nets deposited under the sea in order to recover 1067ha-deep fishery grounds. It also plans to purify 200ha and install about 20 toilets in the fishing areas for the improvement of the environment.

It builds 37 artificial spawning grounds in Imjin River and Bukhan River, and maintains and manages the existing 81 grounds so as to enhance the spawning environment of the species. It also replaces lead-made plumbs of the fishing gears with 80,000 eco-friendly stainless steel plumbs, and collects various wastes and waste gears sunk in the 480ha inland waters of 4 cities and counties including Goyang due to floods and other reasons.

Moreover, it creates more than 3 new participating communities as the measures to build consistent production foundations for fisheries so that fishermen can create and manage marine resources by themselves. It also provides tourist facilities for fishing activities, fishing ground management lines, and joint markets to 10 self-managing communities.

In addition, it plans to curb unlicensed illegal fishing, use of trammel nets, and violation against mesh specifications in order to eradicate illegal fisheries and establish the self-regulating order of the fisheries industry.2.jpg Images◇ Crackdown on illegal fishing ⓒ G-News Plus
