Fairchild Korea (joint representatives: Kim Gwi-nam, Kang Byeong-gon, and Kim Tae-hun) has started operation in the newly expanded production line in its plant in Wonmi-gu, Bucheon.
The ceremony commemorating the work completion was held on July 10 at 10:30 AM and attended by about 300 people including luminaries such as Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor for Economy Kim Hee-gyeom, Bucheon Mayor Kim Man-soo, National Assembly members Won Hye-yeong, Kim Gyeong-hyeop, and Kim Sang-hui, and executive officers of Fairchild.
Commenting on the event, Fairchild Semiconductor CEO Mark Thompson said they saw a need to enhance their production and R&D capabilities further to meet the increasing demand in Asia. “The newly installed 8-inch semiconductor line will produce 700,000 wafers a year. This was our ambitious investment, designed to put an end to the slowdown in sales in Asia,” he explained.
The agreement for said installation of the USD 80 million 8-inch wafer production line was signed in December 2010 between Gyeonggi Province and Fairchild.
“It is nice to see the newly installed wafer production line in Fairchild Korea’s plant in Bucheon. I wish the company continues to enjoy business prosperity, leveraging its sophisticated facility and high-quality R&D personnel. It will bring about advantages to the province in terms of job creation and transfer of cutting-edge technology. We at Gyeonggi Province will do what we can to improve the business environment and provide administrative support,” Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor Kim Hee-gyeom said in his speech during the ceremony.
Fairchild Korea specializes in TV, LCD, and mobile semiconductors (related to the non-memory sector). It is a leading business in Bucheon with annual sales of KRW 380 billion and 1,600 employees. The company won an award in 2005 for having exported USD 500 million worth of goods. In 2008, it received the Grand Prize as an exemplary foreign-based business; that same year, it won the Grand Prize as a good workplace. It opened an in-house childcare center for female employees with young children in 2006.
As for Fairchild Semiconductors located in South Portland, Maine, US, it became the world’s first business to announce the development of commercial integrated circuits in the 1950s. Dubbed the mother of the world’s information technology businesses, it was one of the leading innovative businesses in Silicon Valley, California in the 1960s. Its annual sales stood at KRW 1.5 trillion in 2012. It has a total of 9,500 employees all over the world.
