While the ceramic industry is facing difficulties due to the overall economic stagnation, the Korea Ceramic Foundation (KOCEF) is showing a series of successes in the ceramics public design projects with the 2013 Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (GIBC 2013) coming up.
The public project of ceramic sculptures, which is intended to create new jobs for ceramists by recycling discarded ceramics purchased to vitalize the ceramic industry by adjusting malignity stocks of ceramists two years ago, is gradually coming to fruition.
The ceramic sculptures are functional sculptures that can be used as signs, and they were already installed in Dongducheon and Yangpyeong Yongmunsa Temple and became popular places among tourists to take photos. The observatory in Ansan Sea Scent Arboretum completed last December or the Mosaic Park of Gonjiam Ceramic Park are artworks created with discarded ceramics and natural objects.
In particular, the 1.2km-long military bunker in Gimpo that had been neglected was transformed into an artistic park well loved by the residents as a job creation project for over 300 artists.
Since winning the contract of the pilot project of Chungju Motherland sign sculptures at the Korea Imagination Expo that closed on August 11, the KOCEF also received orders to create sign sculptures for Seosan Sunrise Republic and Gyeongbuk Cheongsong Artist Genius Republic.
If the KOCEF wins the contract for Yangpyeong Natural Republic and Gapyeong Jaranara Republic, the total amount of order for ceramic sign sculptures of the United Nations of Imagination reaches up to KRW 100 million. Pieces of useless ceramics asked to pay for waste collection have risen as materials for profitable products transcending metropolitan councils in an era of fusion culture.
The public project of ceramic sculptures also included the work of decorating Cerapia using discarded ceramics two years ago in Icheon, where the Biennale took place. Moreover, the Mosaic Park of Gonjiam Ceramic Park in Gwangju, which opened in May, this year, is acknowledged for its artistic value as well.
With the GIBC 2013 to be held from September 28 to November 17 serving as a momentum, the KOCEF is planning to develop convergent designs in earnest such as new ceramic sculptures and accessories to create new jobs for ceramists and pioneer new channels for the ceramic industry.
