Upon entering the 11th day since the opening, the 2013 Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (GICB) is receiving great attention.

As of the 11th day of 2013 GICB, the number of visitors is 60,000. This is twice the number of the 6th GICB held in 2011 during the same period.

This number totaled charged exhibition visitors only, so counting the visitors of Gwangju and Yeoju ceramic festivals, it is estimated to be hundreds of thousands of people.

The exhibitions that attract most visitors are the main exhibition International Invitational Competition and the special exhibition HOT Rookies.

This year, the International Invitational Competition switched to the competing method of nomination from contest. This method attracts visitors with the outstanding omnibus composition of space where they can encounter high-level works that match the theme of the Biennale.

The special exhibition HOT Rookies show off unique ideas of 20 young artists worldwide aged 40 and below, selected by online deliberation. In particular, Yoo Eui-jeong’s Record is an unusual piece with celadon and white porcelain Nike shoes and Louis Vuitton logo.

Along with the exhibitions, the children’s main play contents Kids Biennale is gaining the popularity of children. The Kids Biennale is a ceramic playground in which children can enjoy almost 10 different ceramic games at one place such as Racing on a Ceramic Toilet and Making a Ceramic Soldier.

Yeoju Ceramic World based on the theme of ceramic livingware is Korea’s largest ceramic livingware shopping space where visitors can enjoy exhibitions such as The Seven Types of Meals and Ceramics Living Object Contest. The Biennale is receiving great attention from visitors that are in search of inexpensive handicraft ceramic livingware after the opening of the Biennale, which increased the sales by approximately 20 percent.

Gyeonggi Gwangju Gonjiam Ceramic Park is a ceramic theme park in which there is a harmony of history and cultural contents with Paleolithic historical sites inside the park, Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum, and the sculpture park. There are 18 experience programs such as the Korea-China Ceramic exchange exhibition, traditional ceramic table service, camp and mosaic programs.

“GICB is an art event planned to share the friendly and familiar material of soil with the general public,” said Kang Woo-hyon, chairman of the Korea Ceramic Foundation that supervises the Ceramic Biennale. “In addition, there is the popular 365 Ceramic Theme Park showing off the outstanding outdoor environment such as Icheon Cerapia and Yeoju Ceramic World founded in 2011 as well as Gwangju Gonjiam Ceramic Park opened back in May.”

The 2013 Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale is held in Icheon Cerapia, Gwangju Gonjiam Ceramic Park and Yeoju Ceramic World until November 17 under the theme of Community. Various other programs will be provided such as international ceramics workshops and conferences aside from exhibitions.
