“Convergence development in the data era does not require much capital, nor is it difficult to achieve. The focus is gradually changing from hardware that requires capital to intellectual manpower as well as sharing and diffusion. Gyeonggi Province will do its best for convergence development by using big data and opening public data.”

Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-soo participated in the data use and strategy seminar titled “Convergence and Future of the Data Era” held November 4 in the conference room of POSCO ICT in Seongnam Pangyo Techno Valley, where he expressed his opinions as above.

This event was hosted and supervised by the Korea IT Service Industry Association and sponsored by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and Gyeonggi Province. It was a joint seminar among the industrial, academic, research and governmental circles regarding the use of data, and the event consisted of case presentations of data strategy experts in Korea and various cultural performances and attracted over 1,000 participants.

The seminars consisted of various programs under the theme of “Strategies to Use Big Data:” Event 1 was a seminar on strategies to use data, Event 2 presented data analysis and solutions for use, and Event 3 was an inaugural meeting of the Data Convergence Industrial Forum. In particular, cultural performances such as “Music Meets IT” and “Ballerina Who Loved a B-boy” added more significance to the event.2.jpg Images◇ In the Event 1, seminar on strategies to use data, SAP executive director Christopher Han is giving a presentation under the theme of “Creative Innovation Strategies Through Design Thinking.” ⓒ Gyeonggi G-News Heo Seon-ryang

“Social revolution caused by data has already begun,” said Governor Kim in the opening remarks. “We need to secure sovereign authority on data by establishing the data exchange to vitalize the data industry. It is necessary to enhance cooperation among the industrial, academic and research circles including Gyeonggi Province.”

He also added, “We must use data to support young talents full of ideas and passion to take a challenge in business start-ups without the burden of initial investment funds or facilities. We should not limit big data to technological and industrial aspects, but rather expand the application scope to solving national issues like the aging population and efficiency in execution of public finance.”

The seminars included a variety of discussions on the use of data such as “Robot is Big Data: The Service Robot Industry in Big Data” and ”Creative Innovation Strategies through Design Thinking.”

Shin Shin-ae, a division head at National Information Society Agency, received attention by giving a presentation on The Current Promotion Status and Strategies of Big Data in the Public Sector. “Big data, which supports real-time decision making through rapid analysis of issues and helps achieve transparency of national and corporate management, has an extremely high social and economic value,” said Shin, emphasizing the importance of big data in the public sector.

Introducing global cases, Shin presented the importance of implementing big data in the public sector, saying “Singapore, England and the U.S. have already analyzed data since the mid-2000s and are using data in preventing tax evasion, in public order and in avoiding crimes.”

Moreover, there were discussions on the topics of transportation, small businesses, floating population, macroeconomic analysis, use of power IT data, advertising strategies and big data. They were followed by introductions of big data solutions, data analysis technologies and trends by Korean and overseas companies, as well as presentations of plans and operation cases of big data and technology by multiple venture business CEOs in Korea.

“Data is expected to bring a significant change throughout the politics, society and economics in Korea,” said Han Ho-yeon, Information Service Director of the Office for Informatization Planning. “I hope this seminar sets the stage for presenting the ideal image of data development that forms a consensus among the city, community, public and individuals.”3.jpg Images◇ Governor Kim, POSCO ICT vice president Lee In-bong, Dankook University president Chang Ho-sung and other related officials are listening attentively to the presentation of seminar topics. ⓒ Gyeonggi G-News Heo Seon-ryang
