Gyeonggi Province will host a variety of events honoring the province’s 600th anniversary this year.
The province will kick off the new Year 600 by hosting a 2-hour ceremony for two hours from 1:30 p.m. on February 16 at Haenggung Palace of Hwaseong in Suwon City with Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-soo, former governors, Gyeonggi Provincial Council members, and provincial residents.
According to Taejong Sillok (Annals of King Taejong) Volume 27 in the records of January 18 in Year 1414, “West Gyeonggi and east Gyeonggi are now Gyeonggi Province.” Thus, the province explained that it designated this February 17 (January 18 of the lunar calendar) as the 600th anniversary of the province, and opted to hold the ceremony the day before on Sunday to encourage participation by residents.
One of the most noteworthy things about this ceremony marking the 600th anniversary of the province is the emblem used with the slogan “Gyeonggi Province Year 600, the center of a unified Korea.” Nami Island CEO Kang Woo-hyon, who designed this emblem, is also a graphic designer who was in charge of the Seoul Year 600 event.
“I combined the image of Gyeonggi Province embracing the capital city of Seoul and the number 600 with the taegeuk mark, symbolizing Gyeonggi Province Year 600 as a healthy living foundation aiming for a unified Korea,” said Kang.
This emblem will be used in various celebratory events as well as booklets and pamphlets for the 600th anniversary of the province, Truth about Gyeonggi Province, guide maps of Gyeonggi Province, Gyeonggi Province in Statistics and other promotional materials.

On the day of the ceremony, the province will distribute 10,000 copies of the “Year 600 Pamphlet” describing the historical changes and development of Gyeonggi Province in simple passages, maps and pictures. A total of 1,000 copies of Traces and Dreams of Gyeonggi Province Year 600, a celebratory booklet, will be published by the end of May in 4 by 6 high quality hard-cover volume that presents changes in Gyeonggi provincial territories in maps as well as the history, present and future of Gyeonggi Province.
Moreover, 5,000 copies of the existing book Truth about Gyeonggi Province will be published and distributed by the end of March after readjusting the publication message and current statistics of Gyeonggi Province and adding the Year 600 emblem. These modifications will also be reflected in the guide maps of Gyeonggi Province and Gyeonggi Province in Statistics to be distributed on the day of the ceremony.
The ceremony to be held on February 16 will include pre-ceremony events (bell-ringing ceremony, street parade and celebratory performances), a memorial service and a photo exhibition. The highlight will be the memorial service in which the Governor of Gyeonggi Province will be dressed as Choheongwan, the chairman of the council as Aheongwan, and a provincial representative as Jongheongwan to perform the ancestral ritual.
The street parade and performances will be presented by 25 Anseong namsadangpae members (traveling entertainers) as they move from the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace Bell Pavilion (Yeomingak) to the venue, as well as pungmul (beona nori and samgno nori) and tightrope walking in front of the stage. The “Cloud, Rain, Wind and Lightning” by the Gyeonggi Provincial Traditional Music Orchestra is an impressive and passionate percussion performance symbolizing the heartbeat of Gyeonggi Province, the center of a unified Korea.
From February 3 to 16, the province has been promoting the event using new media such as the G-Bus TV guide system, LED electronic boards in major metropolitan areas, car exteriors, KTX vehicles, electronic text boards in Uiwang, elevators in apartment buildings, Facebook, and Twitter.
