In celebration of the visa-free travel agreement enacted between Korea and Russia in 2014, the Gyeonggi health and medical service delegation visited hub cities in far eastern Russia and Siberia including Irkutsk, Novosibirsk and Khabarovsk from March 16 to 22 to introduce Gyeonggi Province’s advanced hospitals and medical technologies and exchange health and medical services.

During the visit, the delegation hosted a variety of events to attract 10,000 Russian patients, including an international medical conference, a medical PR session, and a health seminar for local Korean residents.

The Gyeonggi delegation consisted of provincial officials as well as representatives of nine hospitals in the province: Anyang Sam Hospital, Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital Bucheon, Bucheon St. Mary’s Hospital, Sejong General Hospital, Ajou University Hospital, Good Medical Center, Leon Wiltse Memorial Hospital, Bundang Jesaeng Hospital and Seoul Women’s Hospital.

The delegation first visited Irkutsk, a hub city in Siberia, on March 17, and signed a health and medical cooperation agreement between the two regions.

The main contents of cooperation include: supporting joint research projects; promoting joint seminars, symposiums and other joint events; exchanging experts to share academic knowledge; exchanging information to introduce the latest medical technologies and establish a medical services market; exchanging information on medical markets, technologies and other medical-related industries; and sharing information about related exports and exchanges.

Valentina Voblikova, Deputy Prime Minister of Irkutsk, attended the agreement ceremony to share ideas on the extensive fields of welfare, society, economy and culture of the two regions along with issues pertaining to health and medical services.

On March 19, the delegation met with government officials in Novosibirsk to discuss cooperation between the two regions, support for inter-hospital collaboration, the training of medical specialists, and joint events. They also held a Gyeonggi medical PR session for representatives of the tourism industry and local people of Novosibirsk that day, along with a health seminar for local Korean residents.

On March 21, the delegation visited Khabarovsk, a hub city in far eastern Russia, to host a Gyeonggi-Khabarovsk joint international medical conference. Khabarovsk, which shares a special bond with Gyeonggi Province among various other Russian cities, has been cooperating with Gyeonggi since the signing of an agreement on medical cooperation in 2011.

Over 60 medical trainees were invited from Khabarovsk to receive medical training in Gyeonggi Province, indicating that cooperation between the two regions has produced rewarding results. This visit provided an opportunity for Gyeonggi to reflect on international medical cooperation projects of the past five years and to promote friendly relations between the two regions.

“Novosibirsk and Irkutsk are the greatest economic and trade centers in Siberia as well as hubs of distribution that encompass all areas from Europe to Central Asia and Russia,” said Lee Han-gyeong, Director General of Gyeonggi Province’s Health & Welfare Bureau. “We will join forces to propel cooperative projects in health and medical services so that Gyeonggi Province’s advanced medical technologies can be disseminated throughout all of Russian including the far east and Siberia, which are areas of new opportunity.”
