In commemoration of Hangul Proclamation Day on October 9, Gyeonggi Province will hold a speech contest for marriage-based immigrants and children of multicultural families in Korea. Contest applications are due by August 29.
Geared to promote happy multicultural families through the enhancement of understanding and communication among family members, the contest consists of the Korean Speech Competition for marriage-based immigrants and the Bilingual Speech Competition for children of multicultural families.
Participants can freely choose the topic of their speeches. Marriage-based immigrants who entered Korea after January 1 of 2009, children born between 1996 and 2008, and students in elementary, middle, or high school are eligible to apply for each competition. Participants in the Korean Speech Competition are required to deliver a three-minute speech, while participants in the Bilingual Speech Competition are required to deliver presentations in Korean and in their parent’s native language for two minutes in each language.
The preliminaries will be held at the Gyeonggi Province Government Complex on September 20 for the Bilingual Speech Competition, and on September 24 for the Korean Speech Competition. Contestants who live in remote locations from can submit a video clip for the preliminaries.
All 14 preliminary winners (7 from each competition) will qualify for the final round. The winners of each competition will be given certificates and cash prizes: one Grand Prize (KRW 1 million), one Second Prize (KRW 700,000), two Third Prizes (KRW 500,000), and three Participation Prizes (KRW 300,000).
The winners of Grand Prize of each competition last year were: Lee Yoon-hee, a student from Cheongwon, in the Bilingual Speech Competition with a speech entitled “My mother’s Furisode”; and Ok Na-ri from Jeju Island in the Korean Speech Competition with a speech entitled “My new dream and hope.”
