Gyeonggi Province will hold the 2014 Pyeonghwa Nuri-gil Walking Festival every other Saturday starting from September 13 in Paju City, and later in Yeoncheon County and Gimpo City.

The province previously integrated the names of routes into the “Pyeonghwa Nuri-gil Routes”, and finalized sub-names for the routes in May. Accordingly, this year’s Pyeonghwa Nuri-gil Walking Festival has been specially designed with a Pyeonghwa Nuri-gil bike tour event in each region on the Sunday following the walking event.

The festival is expected to provide the public with the opportunity to walk in what are normally restricted areas and to learn about the nature, history and culture of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

By setting specific themes for each region – music for Paju, books for Yeoncheon and photos for Gimpo – the walking festival has established itself as a venue not only for members of walking clubs but also for families with children. A variety of events under each theme will be offered such as busking and photo spots.

In addition, every step taken by the participants will help raise funds for the conservation of the DMZ. Certificates of volunteer hours for environmental cleanup activities will be given to students who apply in advance.

Those who wish to participate in the walking festival can apply through the official website (www.walkyourdmz.com) starting from August 14. A total of 500-700 applicants will be accepted per city and county on a first-come, first-served basis with payment of a KRW 10,000 entry fee. Event souvenirs such as walking sticks and backpacks will be offered to participants, and a completion certificate will also be provided.
