The nation’s first tramway will be constructed in Pangyo Techno Valley as a new means of transportation.
Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pill and Seongnam City Mayor Lee Jae-myeong signed an MOU to build a tramway September 23 as a part of a landmark project to construct a framework for transportation, tourism and culture services within Pangyo Techno Valley.
Regarding the proposal recently submitted by Seongnam City to build a tramway connecting Pangyo Station to Pangyo Techno Valley, Gyeonggi Province decided to provide full support given that it is a low cost and environmentally friendly alternative to other modes of transportation whose refined design can enhance the image of Seongnam.
Under the agreement, Gyeonggi Province will support the project with railroad technology for design, construction and safety, and will also provide partial financial support for construction. Concurrently, Seongnam City will focus on establishing a basic plan for construction and operation, and will also secure project feasibility. The two parties will create a cooperative system and continue to cooperate closely.
The tramway will include five stations and one tram garage along the 1.5 km route between Pangyo Station and Pangyo Techno Valley. Scheduled for completion by 2017, a total of KRW 25 billion will be invested in the tramway.

Governor Nam Kyung-pil said, “The tramway is a low cost mode of transportation and free from issues such as landscape damage and excessive design. It can also help achieve transit-oriented development in urban areas. I also expect that the tramway will become a tourist attraction of Pangyo for its value as a tourism resource.”
“Pangyo Techno Valley is growing into a place that leads the knowledge-based industries of Korea, and the central government is also trying to develop Pangyo as a mecca of the creative economy. Accordingly, this project to construct a tramway, a mode of eco-friendly transportation, is meaningful especially for the goal of low carbon green growth. Gyeonggi Province will provide full support for early completion,” added Governor Nam.
Mayor Lee Jae-myeong said, “I expect that the traffic and parking problems in Pangyo Techno Valley will be relieved if the tramway starts operation. Backed by support from Gyeonggi Province, we will do our utmost to accomplish the project swiftly and smoothly.”
Gyeonggi Province expects that the tramway project will serve as a stepping stone for further improvements in the transportation systems of Pangyo Techno Valley and in the expansion of sustainable eco-friendly transportation projects.
