Governor Nam has talks with Korea Institute for Shared Growth Chairman Chung Un-chan on December 17; “Chairman Chung’s shared growth strategy points are in line with the views of Gyeonggi Province

Governor Nam Kyung-pil met with Korea Institute for Shared Growth Chairman Chung Un-chan (former prime minister) and had a discussion regarding ‘Gyeonggi-style shared growth models.’

On the afternoon of December 17, Governor Nam Kyung-pil met with Chairman Chung Un-chan at the governor’s office. Governor Nam commented, “One of the six major fields of ‘NEXT Gyeonggi,’ a vision for our future, is ‘NEXT Economy,’ which seeks to build new growth models focusing on growth and consideration. Chairman Chung Un-chan’s ‘shared growth’ strategy points are in line with the views of Gyeonggi Province.”

“If federation is the core of politics, shared growth lies at the center of the economy. Gyeonggi Province has been making efforts to create win-win models in which conglomerates, SMEs, and small merchants all prosper together. We’re planning to create at least a couple of Gyeonggi-style models for shared growth and economic democratization, and will share them throughout the nation next year,” added Governor Nam.

On that day, Governor Nam and Chairman Chung had talks with Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly Member Kim Jun-hyeon (Gimpo, New Politics Alliance for Democracy) and the Korea Institute for Shared Growth Secretary General Yeom Un-ju for over an hour on the topic of shared growth. 

Chairman Chung said, “For shared growth, the self-motivation of conglomerates and support from the ruling party are crucial. Gyeonggi Province, where SMEs are clustered, is a region that requires shared growth more than any other place. As shared growth in Gyeonggi Province is the cornerstone of shared growth in Korea, Gyeonggi Province should proactively carry forward its policies for shared growth.”

“The institute plans to hold a forum on the shared growth of the central and local governments, and I’d like to ask Gyeonggi Province to participate. It would be ideal if Gyeonggi Province and the institute could closely cooperate with each other for shared growth,” added Chairman Chung.

Gyeonggi Province is considered the core region for shared growth as it is where 705,000 SMEs – 21% of the nation’s total figure (as of 2012) – as well as Korea’s leading corporations such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Hyundai Kia Motors, SK and KT are located.

Provincial Assembly Member Kim Jun-hyeon also asked Gyeonggi Province to push forward with its policies, saying, “Today, as a representative, I brought the ordinance bill to support the shared growth of large, medium and small businesses in Gyeonggi Province before the assembly, and the standing committee passed it.”

The ordinance bill to support the shared growth of large, medium and small businesses in Gyeonggi Province encompasses the governor’s duty to enforce shared growth policies including providing support for mutually beneficial cooperation among large, medium and small companies, conducting fact-finding investigations, and establishing a win-win cooperation committee.
