Classification: Historic Site 202 (Joseon Period)

angneung is the tomb of King Wonjong and his wife, Queen Inheon. King Wonjong was the father of King Injo, the 16th king of Joseon (1623~1649). King Wonjong is Jeongwon-gun, fifth son of King Seonjo. He was reputedly handsome, tall, and prudent and loved his brothers deeply and so King Seonjo loved him very much. At first, Jeongwon-gun was buried in Gokchon-ri, Yangju-gun. His first son, Neungyang-gun (King Injo) dethroned Gwanghae-gun and came to the throne through restoration, making Jeongwon-gun, Daewon-gun which means father of the king. The status of his tomb was thus heightened and it was renamed Heunggyeongwon.

In 1627, King Injo moved Jeongwon-gun’s tomb to Seongsan Hill in Gimpo and renamed him King Wonjong, and his tomb Jangneung. Queen Inheon was designated Yeonjubu Buin after his son’s coronation. Her palace was named Gyeun-gung. The queen died at 49 in 1626 and was buried on Seongsan Hill in Gimpo. Her tomb was called Yukgyeong-won. Jeongwon-gun’s remains were taken to be buried in the same grave as her wife. So Yukgyeong-won was renamed Honggyeongwon. The size and standards of the tombs are typical of the middle Joseon period. Under the tombs is a memorial service hall. King Yeoungjo and King Jeongjo, the 21st and 22nd kings of the Joseon Dynasty attended a memorial service to her, held there every year. The area ringing the tombs is something of a park. It is easily accessible by car from Seoul. People flock to this spot for picnics on holidays.
