These are pine trees which are estimated to be about 300 years old. They are often called ‘drooping pine trees’ since their branches tend to droop downwards. They are not so high but characterized by their long-stretched horizontal branches which, as a whole, are shaped after an open umbrella. They are called Couple Pines because, from a distance, they look like a couple, of which the husband embraces the wife. They have been worshiped from of old as a sacred thing and it is said that, during the Japanese rule of Korea, Japanese cut 10 most sacred pine trees including these trees in Korea with a view to cutting off the spirit of Korea.
