“Sales promotion in Los Angeles for oyster mushrooms developed by Gyeonggi Province”

Gyeonggi Province will host sales promotion events for its oyster mushrooms until June 26 at 15 different markets in Los Angeles including 99 Ranch.

The sales promotion launches a new variety of oyster mushrooms in the American market. Developed by Gyeonggi Province and produced by the the Cheongarang Agricultural Association Corporation, the new product is named ‘Matari’.

Matari is a new variety that addresses the weaknesses of existing oyster mushrooms which could not stay fresh for very long and suffered from discoloration as well as extensive cap damage. Matari also offers excellent taste and storability. Gyeonggi Province expects Matari to be viable for distribution up to 20 days after arriving in the American market.

An official with the Gyeonggi Provincial Government said, “The trend of Americans preferring well-being food combined with the excellent quality of Korean mushrooms is becoming better known in the market, and the possibilities for expanding into the American market are growing larger.” He added “The provincial government plans to pursue strategic promotional marketing to help Gyeonggi mushrooms enter the United States.”

While the promotional events are running, Gyeonggi Province will distribute flyers with information such as recipes that can be used by American families when cooking at home in order to increase repurchase rates among local consumers.

Oyster mushrooms in Gyeonggi Province are being harvested from 83 hectares, accounting for 41% of total production in Korea. Last year, 406 tonnes of oyster mushrooms were exported to countries including the United States and Australia for USD 1,394,000.
