Gyeonggi Province announced on July 6 that its alien population surpassed 550,000, a 12.5% increase since last year.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Government explained that the number of long-term foreign residents, naturalized citizens, and children of alien residents in Gyeonggi Province was 554,160 according to the 2015 Local Municipality Alien Resident Status (as of January 1, 2015) compiled by the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs. 

This accounts for 4.5% of the total registered population of Gyeonggi Province (12,357,830). With regard to the alien population of 1,741,919 nationwide, Gyeonggi Province accounts for 31.8%.

By category, there were 228,836 (41.3%) alien workers, 100,221 (18.1%) ethnic Koreans with foreign nationalities, 66,654 (12%) immigrants through international marriage, and 52,815 (9.5%) children of alien residents. By gender, there were 298,745 (53.9%) men and 255,415 (46.1%) women. 

Looking deeper, most alien workers were men (70.7%) while most international marriage immigrants were women (86.1%). 

In terms of nationality, China led the way with 338,270 (61.1%) followed by Vietnam with 43,261 (7.8%), the Philippines with 20,645 (3.7%), and the United States of America with 18,783 (3.4%).

Ansan was home to the largest alien population with 83,648. In particular, Ansan had the largest alien population among all municipalities nationwide. Within Gyeonggi Province, Suwon had the second largest alien population with 55,981 (10.1%), followed by Siheung with 45,471 (8.2%). The number of cities or counties with more than 10,000 alien residents increased from 17 to 20 this year.
