Checking real-time local bus information in Gyeonggi Province will become easier during the latter half of 2015.
On July 9, Gyeonggi Province announced that it will test its local bus information service in 10 cities including Seongnam, Anyang, Yongin, Siheung, Gwangmyeong, Uiwang, Hanam, Guri, Gwacheon, and Yangju starting this September.
By the end of August, Gyeonggi Province will integrate basic information generated by the province and the 10 cities that have completed developing the integrated system. The province will commence pilot testing as early as September. Subsequently, the service will be phased in across 21 cities with local bus services by 2017.
Choi Young-doo, head of the Gyeonggi Province Transportation Information Center, said, “Local buses resemble capillaries in our body and perform important functions.” He continued, “By providing integrated bus information, we will create a more convenient future in which people can check bus information for local, intra-city, and inter-city buses using a variety of outlets.”
The integrated local bus information system enables users to check information including the current status of local bus routes, real-time bus locations, bus stop information by region, and estimated time of arrival by station whenever and wherever they are using smartphone applications (Gyeonggi Bus Information 2), Gyeonggi Bus Information Service’s website (www.gbis.go.kr), and the ARS service (1688-8031).
At present, 143 bus companies across 21 cities including Goyang, Gwacheon, and Uijeongbu are operating 1,955 buses that serve 605 routes in Gyeonggi Province.
Among the 21 cities, only 12 including Gwacheon, Guri, Gunpo, Namyangju, Bucheon, Siheung, Anyang, Yangju, Yongin, Uiwang, and Paju have been offering limited local bus information through individually developed systems such as electronic displays at bus stations and city/county websites.
The different systems of each local municipality were incompatible with one another, making it difficult for inter-city passengers. For instance, information for a local bus departing from Namyangju and arriving in Seoul was available in Namyangju City, but information for the relevant route was not available in Seoul.
To address this issue, Gyeonggi Province finished developing a communication program that allows 21 cities within the province as well as adjacent municipal organizations such as Seoul and Incheon to link and share local bus information.
