Expectations are mounting for increased exports of Gyeonggi Province rice products to Southeast Asia.
On September11, Gyeonggi Province reported that the Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services (GARES) along with the Rice Convergence Industry-Academy Business Group had attracted substantial interest at the 2015 VietFood & Beverage. Held in Ho Chi Minh city Vietnam, this international food and beverage exhibition ran from September 9 to 12.
Fifteen products produced by 8 food processing companies from across Gyeonggi Province using technology transferred from GARES – including organic rice crackers, rice syrup, ‘makgeolli’ (rice wine), ‘sanyangsam yakju’ (wood-cultivated ginseng and herb liquor), and ‘shikhye’ (rice beverage) without rice grains – were displayed at the 2015 VietFood & Beverage.
According to GARES, it received quote requests from more than 10 companies from countries including Vietnam and Malaysia worth approximately USD 200,000 in possible export opportunities. GARES expects these inquiries to open the floodgates into the Southeast Asian market for rice products made in Gyeonggi Province.
GARES Director Lim Jae-wook said, “GARES plans to keep its focus on increasing the consumption of rice, widening the variety of rice products, developing technologies to increase the quality of rice products, supporting expansion into overseas markets, and marketing efforts based on joint research with the Rice Convergence Industry-Academic Cooperation Group.”
