A health and medical services delegation from Gyeonggi Province led by Gyeonggi Social Integration Vice Governor Lee Ki-woo visited Phnom Penh in Cambodia. The delegation returned to Korea on September 23 after a four-day mission from September 20 to 23.
The delegation sought to establish a foundation upon which the health and medical services industry of Gyeonggi Province can expand globally. Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly Health and Welfare Committee member Lee Tae-ho, and representatives from medical institutes across Gyeonggi Province including Seoul National University, Bundang Hospital, Ajou University Hospital, Bundang Jesaeng Hospital, and Sam Hospital also participated in the mission. This occasion marks the first official visit by a provincial delegation to Cambodia since Gyeonggi Province and Kampot Province established friendly relations back in 2002.
In the afternoon of September 21, the delegation invited over 100 guests from the Cambodian government as well as the Cambodian health and medical service industry to the Cambodiana Hotel for a Korea-Cambodia medical service sector friendship networking event.
On September 22, the delegation visited Deputy Prime Minister H·E Yim Chhay Ly and discussed measures for cooperative ventures in health and medical services between the two regions.
The delegation also signed an MOU pertaining to invitational training programs for medical service personnel, information exchange for medical information systems, and mutual support for health and medical service exhibitions with Kampong Cham Province, creating a foundation to enhance cooperative ties in related fields.
In addition, the delegation held a ‘nanum’ (sharing) medical ceremony and extended an invitation for free knee surgery to Cambodian patient Lorn Lisa (female, 14 months), who has been unable to walk due to a congenital hip joint disorder.
Regarding the delegation’s visit to Cambodia, Social Integration Vice Governor Lee Ki-woo said, “Cambodia is a market with great potential in terms of attracting patients if Gyeonggi Province’s advanced medical technology can be promoted strategically based on cooperative activities in health and medical services.” Vice Governor Lee also explained, “Through this visit, we expect interactions in health and medical service fields with Cambodia, such as training programs for medical service personnel as well as medical information exchanges, to receive a boost.”
