Gyeonggi Province and Jiangsu
Province will enhance economic cooperation in cutting-edge sectors including
smart technology and new energy.
At 5:30pm on May 6, Gyeonggi
Administrative Vice Governor Yang Bok-wan met Jiangsu Province Governor Shi
Taifeng at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government complex in Suwon to discuss measures
for mutual development and the improvement of Korea-China relations.
More than 30 participants from
both Korea and China including Vice Governor Yang Bok-wan, Governor Shi
Taifeng, Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly Vice Chair, and other provincial assembly
members including Gwak Mi-sook were present for the meeting.
Jiangsu Province lies in the
central region of the Yangtze River Delta, which is regarded as the most
economically developed region in China. With an economic zone built on the
Yangtze River Delta that includes the provinces of Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang,
this region is vital to the Chinese economy – including the 80
million people (6% of China’s population) residing in the region – and accounts for 21% of
the national GDP.
As of 2015, Jiangsu Province
recorded a GRDP of KRW 1,270 trillion. In particular, it is expected to become
a new growth engine for the national economy and pass Guangdong Province (KRW
1,310 trillion), which has been the top contributor to the GDP of China.
Recently, Jiangsu Province has
been seeking to promote growth in terms of quality under the new motto ‘Smart Jiangsu’. The province aims to foster
its future cutting-edge industries through such initiatives as creating a smart
city, establishing a smart grid (intelligent electrical grid), and developing solar
cells. It is also the largest investment destination and trade partner for
Korean corporations in China. It shares a number of similarities with Gyeonggi
Province and it is considered to have unlimited potential.
Since entering into formalized
friendly relations in 2011, both regions have maintained close cooperative
relations in various fields such as commerce, administration, tourism, health, the
environment, and agriculture via the mutual exchange of official delegations, training
programs for medical systems or outstanding clinical testing, and the mutual
exchange of environmental industry cooperation groups.
At the meeting, Vice Governor
Yang said, “With
the recent ratification of the Korea-China FTA, increasing cooperation at the
regional level has become important.” He added, “Given Gyeonggi Province
and Jiangsu Province are both key regions to their respective national
economies, let’s
enhance our cooperation based on the China Business Center and Startup Campus
in Pangyo Zero City. By doing so, we can promote startups and business
initiatives between the two countries.”
In addition, Vice Governor
Yang proposed the promotion of more substantial cooperation in health and
medicine, agriculture, environment, and tourism.
Governor Shi Taifeng said, “I agree that we must
turn the Korea-China FTA into a new opportunity. I think we need to enhance
economic cooperation by having corporations from each country enter the other
country’s markets.” Governor Shi continued,
“In
particular, I know that Gyeonggi Province is a leader in creative innovation. I
hope we can expand our cooperation in cutting-edge innovation including smart
technology, new energy, electronic information, and financial services.”
The Jiangsu
Province delegation, led by Governor Shi Taifeng, finishes a five-day schedule on
the morning of May 10 and then travels to Japan.
