Gyeonggi Province’s ‘Happy Car Share’ program will have its
coverage extended to cities and counties across the province.
Gyeonggi Province began the
Happy Car Share program for the first time this past May to share the unused vehicles
of public organizations with Gyeonggi residents over weekends and public
holidays.
Of particular note, during
this year’s
Chuseok holidays, Siheung, Bucheon, and Osan – three cities with the
capacity to share their vehicles – will pilot test the program to help Gyeonggi
residents visit their hometowns more conveniently.
As such, a total of 123
vehicles, including 105 owned by Gyeonggi Province, 10 by Siheung, three by
Bucheon, and five by Osan will be available for free. Considering only 21
vehicles were available over the Lunar New Year holidays earlier this year, the
program is growing rapidly thanks to considerable interest from Gyeonggi
residents.
Those who wish to borrow a
vehicle over the Chuseok holidays (September 14 to 18) can apply until noon
(12:00) on September 6.
The provincial government will
review applications and extend preliminary approval to applicants. Gyeonggi
Province will then confirm the eligibility of applicants for four days and give
final confirmations on September 9. Residents on basic living security and lower-income
family groups, single parent families, multicultural families, multi-children
families, and North Korean defectors will be given priority among eligible
Gyeonggi residents.
In addition, there are now
more free cultural and tourism benefits available for Happy Car Share users across
Gyeonggi Province.
Users will be given free
admission tickets to Gwangmyeong Cave and the Uiwang rail bike facility. Each
week, three families will be able to visit Gwangmyeong cave from August 20, and
four families will be able to use the Uiwang rail bikes from September 3.
Car Share users will be able
to use previously offered services to the Korean Folk Village, Yangpyeong
Semiwon, the Gyeonggi Province Mulhyanggi Arboretum, six venues operated by the
Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation(Gyeonggi Provincial Museum, Gyeonggi Museum of
Modern Art, Nam June Paik Art Center, Jeongok Prehistory Museum, Silhak Museum,
Namhansanseong Haenggung Temporary Palace), and the Gyeonggi Arts Center for
free.
Gyeonggi Province will extend
the Happy Car Share service to cover the entire province based on the results
of the pilot project over the Chuseok holidays. The provincial government
announced that it is planning to enact a related ordinance among cities and
counties that did not participate in the program for this year’s Chuseok holidays such
as Uijeongbu, Gwangmyeong, and Yongin.
Meanwhile, on July 19, Gyeonggi
Province enacted an ordinance on the shared use of public vehicles in Gyeonggi
Province to provide a legal basis for this project.
