The Pyeonghwanuri-gil
Walking Event, scheduled for September 24 (Saturday), offers a
chance to walk through the DMZ area, a treasure trove of wildlife. The event will talk place along Pyeonghwanaru-gil
course no. 4 near the Haengjunaru-gil area.
This event, co-hosted by Gyeonggi Province, Goyang
City, and the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization, revolves around the theme of
‘Pyeonghwanuri-gil blooming in a bed of autumn flowers’ and features two
courses – one for beginners and another for intermediate hikers – so as to cater to different age groups among families,
friends, and social clubs.
The beginner course is a 5km-long circuit that
begins at the Event Plaza at OneMount, passes through the Cactus Exhibition
Hall, the Flower Garden, and returns to the Event Plaza. The intermediate
course is an 11.5km-long one-way course that begins at the Event Plaza at OneMount,
passes by the Shinpyeong guard post, continues along the Han River wire fence
trail, and into Goyang City Training Institute.
The beginner course provides a great chance to take
a stroll and enjoy the scenery of early autumn with your children, while the
intermediate course is good for enjoying the autumn view of the Han River
flowing beyond the barbed wire fence.
Of particular note, this year’s event will feature
programs in which everyone can easily take part regardless of their age or
gender.
The beginner course will include the ‘We Love
Pyeonghwanuri-gil – Walking Man!’, in which participants can receive small
souvenirs if they accomplish surprise missions during their walk. The intermediate
course will have the ‘Peace
is Always Beautiful’ event in which participants can
tie ribbons bearing written messages of
peace to the barbed wire fence with large fallen leaves. Apart from the two
exclusive missions, the event will also feature face painting and
photo card events for all participants.
Moreover, event organizers have prepared an
opportunity for participants to spend a meaningful time taking part in activities
and education that protect the environment in the DMZ. Participants can donate
part of their participation fees to the DMZ area environmental conservation
campaign fund, and those students who apply in advance can take part in
environment cleanup activities and earn volunteer service hours (two hours for
the 5km course, three hours for the 11.5km course).
In a linked event, participants will have the
chance to walk with movie star Lee Gwang-ki and student Park Won-hwi, both of
whom have been appointed as honorary ambassadors for the Pyeonghwanuri-gil
Walking Event this year. Participants can even take photos with the honorary
ambassadors at the photo wall at the venue. Of particular note, student Park
Won-hwi turned heads as he inspired disabled people and gave them hope by
completing all 12 courses (191km) of the Pyeonghwanuri-gil last year despite
his developmental disorder.
Those who wish to participate in the event
can apply through the official website for the Pyeonghwanuri-gil Walking Event
(www.walkyourdmz.com) from August 22. The event will accept up to 1,500 participants for
the beginner course (5km) and 1,000 participants for the intermediate course
(11.5km) on a first-come, first-served basis. The beginner course costs KRW
5,000 (participants will each receive a high-quality tumbler [subject to change])
and the intermediate course costs KRW 15,000 (participants will receive a
Treksta hiking hip sack).
During the latter half of 2016, the walking event
will take place again on October 15 (Saturday) along Pyeonghwanuri-gil course
no. 1 along the Yeomha River wire fence trail (Gimpo). A special bicycle tour
(Gimpo) will also take place on October 22 (Saturday).
