With
temperatures dropping in late autumn, Gyeonggi Province and the KT&G Social
Welfare Foundation hosted an event to share some love and warmth.
At 9:30am
on November 1, more than 180 volunteers from the KT&G Social Welfare
Foundation, Gyeonggi Province Community Agency for the Blind, and welfare
organizations in Uijeongbu including senior welfare centers participated in the
‘Kimchi-making
Relay for Love’ at Gyeonggi Province’s Northern Government Complex.
This
year’s Kimchi-making
Relay for Love is part of the ‘Care for Solitary Seniors Project’ that the Gyeonggi Provincial
Government and the KT&G Social Welfare Foundation have been promoting since
2012. The event delivered kimchi ‘made with love and care’ to solitary senior citizens
and other marginalized members of communities in northern Gyeonggi who have
difficulties preparing for the cold of winter.
Approximately
11,950kg of kimchi made by volunteers was delivered to marginalized community members
– 1,195 households including solitary senior citizens in the Uijeongbu area and
local free soup kitchens.
The KT&G
Social Welfare Foundation has been holding this Kimchi-making Relay for Love
event in liaison with local social welfare organizations and KT&G
production facilities across the country each year. The KT&G Social Welfare
Foundation plans to host additional Kimchi-making Relays for Love for marginalized
community members in Yeoncheon and Pocheon at the Yeoncheon Public Sports
Complex on November 3, and in Dongducheon and Yangju at the Dongducheon Sports
Complex on November 8.
One provincial official said, “As we increase our
voluntary efforts to share with our neighbors, it gives hope to more
marginalized members of our community. Therefore, I hope that people can take
more interest and participate in these events to help continue our support for
low-income families.” The official added, “I hope this Kimchi-making
Relay for Love becomes an opportunity for the culture of sharing to spread across
our society.”
