Expansion of Senior Welfare to prepare for the Aging Society

To prepare for the aging society coming in 2006, Gyeonggi-do is planning to radically expand senior welfare facilities.

First of all, for seniors who have trouble to moving around and suffer from Altzheimer’s disease, a free special recruitment facility for seniors will be built in each district until 2006.

Currently only 6 facilities are operating and 9 facilities are under construction. Total of 31 recruitment facilities will be operating till the year 2006.

The 6 facilities in service now are in Gwangmyeong , Gwangju , Gimpo , Anseong , Namyangju , Paju and other provinces in Korea. The locations of facilities under construction are in Suwon, Anyang and so on. These facilities will be open to seniors starting from late to year till early next year.

In addition, special senior facilities will be constructed yearly from 2004 to 2006 in 16 districts including Anyang and Bucheon .

At the same time, senior welfare halls for senior leisure activities will also be constructed each city and district until 2006.

Gyeonggi-do is also planning to establish a nonprofit organization to take charge of support senior employment. The already 8 senior volunteer centers will be expanded to other districts to activate senior volunteer activities. The 47% support rate to the total respect-for-age association will be increased to 70% till 2006 for social volunteer expenses.
