The ecology of freshwater fishes living in Korea can be observed at the “Gyeonggi-do Freshwater Fish Aquarium”, which opened on July 11.

According to the province, 23 million residents, including the young population, can study the ecology of Korean freshwater fish at this aquarium. A campaign on the importance of protecting our nature and maintaining water ecosystem has been carried out by investing 1.7 billion Won since May of last year to construct the aquarium. Residents can visit the aquarium any time of the year for free.

Within the waterproof development examination hall in Yongmun-myeon , Yangpyeong-gun , the aquarium takes up about 300 pyong of 3 floors (2 above ground and 1 underground). Golden freshwater mandarin fish, lenok, hemibarbus mylodon and other fishes specified as natural monuments and also Chinese ninespine stickeleback, black shinner, Korean torrent catfish, Korean dark sleeper and other unfamiliar freshwater fishes totaling 77 species are on exhibition.

In addition, there is also an image study hall where the ecology of how freshwater fish can be seen. There is also an outdoor touch exhibition for children to touch carp, crucian carp and cut-tailed bullhead and other fishes.

Before the grand opening, about 4 thousand visitors from schools and organizations have already visited for one month. Since the aquarium stands next to the Yongmun Mountain National Resort, 100 thousand visitors are expected to visit the aquarium each year making the facility a major tourist attraction.
