As the vacation season in Gyeonggi-do has just begun, the province is enforcing a large-scale cleanup movement called “Cleaning up Our Mountains”.
The origin of the movement is from the polluted mountains and forests due to illegal garbage dumping, cooking in the mountains and the increase of visitors as resort areas and culture are centralizing to quiet and pleasant places.
Gyeonggi-do designated 115 areas of 44 thousand ha which includes ravines and noted mountains such as Gwanggyo Mt. in Suwon, as “Mountain Cleanup Protection Zone”. Every first Saturday of each month is specified as 「Green Mountain Day」and organizations of residents, groups and officials will unite to collect garbage in mountains and carry forth publicity activities to picnickers about this campaign.
For an efficient promotion to cleanup mountains, 447 organizations with about 40 thousand members will be in charge of appointed mountains under the motive 「Mountains are cleaned up by their visitors」. Organization name in charge will be written on each 34 signs and placed in mountain areas and also awards will be presented to 10 groups and individuals for active participation.
In addition, illegal garbage disposal and cooking in mountains will be regulated to create a healthy and pleasant mountain environment. As the anxiety of illegal actions and safety in natural resorts grows, intensive control on mountain visitors will be carried out for nature conservation.
