Pressing for National Policies to Improve Metropolitan Area Regulations

Hak-kyu Sohn, Governor of Gyeonggi-do, stressed the importance of materializing policies for improvement on regulations for Metropolitan areas. 

Sohn said at the monthly meeting held at the provincial office conference room, on Sept. 5, regardless of regulations related with Metropolitan areas, the successful inducement of the Paju LCD factory and appointment as an industrial complex in August, is the work of local government officials in Gyeonggi-do and decision-making on policies by the central government. 

Sohn requested to public officials that they are not in loss by regulations and that these regulations should be applied to the industrial development in Gyeonggi-do and furthermore to the whole nation. 

Sohn said at the forum held on Sept. 4, that it was not sufficient to talk about regulations on Metropolitan areas while governors of Seoul and Incheon are absent. 

Through this forum, Sohn said this is not only for the prosperity of Gyeonggi-do, but also for the goodness of Korea itself, and the connection between Metropolitan areas and other districts may be accepted as a dichotomy antagonistic relationship, competitive relationship and also zero-sum relationship. 

He also stressed the importance of making the best out of the competitive power between Metropolitan areas and Gyeonggi-do and that the current competition must be resolved internationally by competing with China and Japan and confronting capital flowing from Europe at the same time. 

The regulation issue has been brought up in meetings with ministers, vice-ministers, directors, officers of the state and also the President of Korea. The President promised to propel improvements on regulations during his term at talks with Gyeonggi-do residents and urged for concrete plans to reform existing regulations by the central government.
