Spring Cleaning Campaign
– Focus on Making the Clean and Pleasant Environment
Gyeonggi-do will lead the “Provincial Spring Cleaning Campaign” with a number of government offices, residents, soldiers, and civil officers for one month from April 1. A provincial official explained that the campaign is intended to better the environment that had been polluted from uncontrolled waste disposal in open fields, public land sites, agricultural land sites, mountains, streets, and streams.
Control teams and special task forces have been organized to conduct real-time inspections over garbage dumping. Some of the special programs include “No-Dumping Day” campaign, Seasonal Cleaning Day campaign, Environment Maintenance Duty program, and Sweeping My Street campaign.
Movements against the use of disposable goods, uncontrolled waste disposal, and illegal incineration will be more actively spread. April 2 will be designated as the Seasonal Cleaning Day to clean out the empty lots, alleyways, construction sites, and amusement parks with participation by representatives from various organizations, residents, soldiers, and civil officers.
April 4 through 9 will be named the Spring Cleaning Week to restore the environment in agricultural land sites, mountains, and green belt areas that have been contaminated from illegal waste disposal and construction activities. Government agencies and participants will run real-time inspections over illegal conducts to impose strict administrative control measures. Used plastic goods such as greenhouse construction materials and pesticide containers will be collected with much care to prevent further land pollution and create pleasant rural environment.
Government will apply fines and improvement orders to land owners or squatters in an effort to punish the abandonment activities and illegal incineration of garbage using temporary incineration furnaces through the Environment Maintenance Duty program. Newly organized control teams and special task forces will be found active particularly in common illegal dumping grounds such as parks.
Organizations participating in the Spring Cleaning Campaign will be provided with official garbage bags, recycling bins, and garbage trucks to put more emphasis on voluntary efforts by residents in environmental improvement.
A provincial official stated, “This Spring Cleaning Campaign not only encourages people to pick up garbage left abandoned in open fields, but it also promotes betterment of public awareness about the environment in terms of illegal disposal and incineration. It is intended to create the clean and pleasant environment for everyone, and the province requests for active residence participation.”
