During the 2005 Students’ Peace March event held as part of the World Peace Festival hosted by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office in August, a team of 100 volunteer students helped carry out the event, setting up temporary lodgings, collecting garbage, and directing traffic.
With the aforesaid event over, they decided to continue to carry out voluntary activities for communities in the province.
On September 10, the volunteers will spend time together with forty-four handicapped people and forty ethnic Korean senior citizens from Sakhalin (They found new home in Korea) in Everland (a theme park) and Folk Village in Yongin.
Despite the expectedly busy schedule in the beginning of a new semester, the percentage of students who expressed willingness to participate in the voluntary activity was high. A volunteer said, “I am happy to see that many team members [80%] are willing to take part in such an activity for the needy. We felt how sweet it was to do something for others during the Peace March event held in August, even though the work was not easy and we sometimes felt very tired.” Some of them will come from as far as Ulsan and Daegu for the voluntary activity.
The provincial office plans to provide all possible support for these young volunteers who expressed willingness to sacrifice themselves despite their busy schedule at school. An official said, “It is good to see so many young people willing to be engaged in altruistic activities. We will provide unsparing support for their voluntary activities.”
