Looking back on the history of early Baekje through a special exhibition.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Museum is holding an exhibition, ‘Hanseong Baekje Special Exhibition’, which will display valuable artifacts of the Baekje Dynasty in the indoor exhibit hall till July 9.
Hanseong Baekje is an ancient nation founded by the Han River in 18 B.C.. The nation was active in foreign transactions and was uplifted with an international culture earlier than other countries. Baekje flourished culturally as they accepted the advanced culture of China’s Namjo, and spread the study of Chinese classics to Japan.
The lifestyle of Hanseong Baekje will be reproduced in this exhibition so that people will get a chance to virtually experience the culture of that time.
This exhibition will largely proceed with 4 major themes of The dawn of Hanseong Baekje Life and death in Hanseong Baekje Productivity of Hanseong Baekje Foreign relations of Hanseong Baekje. In the ‘Life and death’ corner, food, clothing, and shelter of the Baekje people will be displayed, and in the ‘Productivity’ corner, ironware, earthenware, and glass that Baekje people personally made will be shown. In the ‘Foreign relations’ section, there will be an array of Baekje’s interactions with nearby foreign countries, wars, and the armament they used.
Through this exhibition, over 100 pieces of relics of Hanseong Baekje that the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum possesses, along with a total of over 500 pieces that are owned by nationwide national/public museums will find their way to the public.
Diverse programs have been prepared in this ‘Hanseong Baekje Special Exhibition’ in order to help the understanding of the visitors. Videos will play in relation to each exhibit, and there is a modest experience corner for people to enjoy. Also, anyone can personally make their own Baekje earthenware in ‘A day in a life of a Baekje potter’ experience event.
For the special exhibition, Shin Seung-bok, from Buyeo Baekje (traditional experience education center), will show a demonstration of Baekje earthenware at the museum’s outdoor auditorium, and on June 24, 40 people comprising the province’s disabled children and their families will be invited free of charge to see the exhibition and have a chance to take part in making pottery.
Exhibition opening hours are from 9AM till 6PM (till 7PM on Saturdays and holidays). The museum is closed every Monday and admission fee for ages 19~24 are 300 won, 25~64 are 700 won and free for under 19 and over 65.
