Construction of the 100th Anniversary Memorial of Ahn, Eki-tai
– Exteriorization of the public subscription work ‘Shadows of a Sound’ – 

A 100th anniversary memorial was erected in Spain in memory of Ahn, Eki-tai birth.
The Gyeonggi government and the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization (GTO, President Shin Hyun-tae) announced the unveiling ceremony of the memorial was held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain on June 15.

The memorial installation was planned after Governor Sohn appointed Ahn’s family as the publicity ambassador of Gyeonggi-do in March.

After the agreement between both Gyeonggi-do and Mallorca, 18 artworks were submitted through a prize public subscription in Sept. 2005 and among the artworks Joan Josep Costa Morales’s ‘Shadows of a Sound’ (Spain) was selected.

‘Shadows of a Sound’ is about 5.5 m high and 7.8 m in diameter, consists three steel pillars, a support and a description plate. The three pillars represent sound wave, wings and sea waves, and the overall monument displays movement above space and time, and the unique activity of music.

The monument was designed so that water flows out from the bottom of the granite support. The portrait of Ahn and the music sheet of the national anthem of Korea are engraved on the description place in front of the monument also with an introduction of Ahn’s contributions.

Governor Sohn, GTO President Shin, Hyun-tae, representatives of the Gyeonggi Province, Korean Ambassador to Spain Lee, Chun-sun, Mayor of Mallorca and the Ahn’s family attended the unveiling ceremony.

An government official expressed his expectations on the cooperation and cultural exchange between Spain and Korea through this event.
