150 undergraduate students to travel 340kms of tragic division land on foot

The kick-off ceremony for ‘2006 Undergraduate Wanderer for Peace’, in which the students will be marching the divided land between Gyeonggi and Gangwon with their youth and passion, was held on the 9th provincial office of Gyeonggi.

For 12 nights and 13 days, 150 undergraduate students selected from all over the country will be walking along the frontier districts of DMZ and the dam of peace in Hwacheon for ‘2006 Undergraduate Wanderer for Peace’ that is a part of 2006 Peace Festival held by Gyeonggi and Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation. In Paju at the ceremony hall of Peace Festival, a great disbanding ceremony will be waiting for the group of participants.

Since it is an exhausting march to travel 340kms on foot, the province has prepared public health doctors for the well of wandering group. Also, 119 emergency car will standby in the nearby for a quick mobilization. 

At the kick-off ceremony, the vice governor Won Yoochul on behalf of the Governor Kim Munsoo said “Thru this wandering challenge for the peace, hope you can overcome yourselves and build an everlasting friendship with your friends next to you. But above all, I wish that all of you will see and feel a great sorrow of being divided into two.”Since the wanderers will be passing thru the places hit by typhoon, the vice governor Won also said “All of you are the future leaders of Korea. Hope all of you will come back with the pains of histories and realities, especially the suffers that the people would be in after the recent disaster.”

Other messages from the former governor Sohn Hakkyu and the senior wandering group to encourage this wandering group were also delivered; “You will have an invaluable experience in this challenge. Tiding over many difficulties never experienced and standing this hot weather, I am sure you will see a great passion in yourselves and also you will be able to come back with great friends and confidence.”
