Gyeonggi to implement aggressive fire prevention activity

Gyeonggi will establish ‘Forest Fire Prevention Units’ at 54 cities and districts by May 15, to prevent forest fires that frequently occur during the spring season.

“Dry weather has continued since the end of last year added with the global warming and El Nino phenomenon, raised the risk of having more forest fires this year than the past years, which direct us to take immediate action to prevent fires.”, reported by an official from the Gyeonggi government.

Since most forest fires are caused by the incineration of rice and farming fields during the thawing season and also accidental fires started by mountain climbers, Gyeonggi locked out 235 mountains paths (1,042 km) that is approximately 68% of the 345 major local mountains paths (1,503 km). Also, in February, any inflammables in the 1,599 rice and farming fields (596 ha) will completely be removed and the incineration activities required for the rice and farming fields will be performed collectively so that any individual incineration will strictly be prohibited.

Fire Prevention Petrol will be located at every major mountain paths and any other places with possible gatherings to control potential risks that may raise forest fires. Also, the local government will classify the whole province upon the regional peculiarity such as the Northern Mountain Region, Southern Farming Region, Western Downtown, Industrial Complex Region, Eastern Leisure Region, and etc. to implement perfect fire monitoring and control system for each different regions so to immediately detect and extinguish forest fires.
