The Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment and the University of Queensland have agreed to promote joint international research and to conclude a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in 2008. This agreement was facilitated through an international teleconference hosted by the institute and joined by total of 12 representatives: six representatives from the institute including President Kim Jong-chan and Atmospheric Chemistry Team Leader Park Yong-chool, five representatives from the university including Professor Michael Moore and Professor Jochen Mueller, and Commercial Agent Song Sang-hyun from the Queensland State Government.
The conference call was conducted in English and lasted an hour and a half. Main discussions focused on the conclusion of the MOU, decisions on research areas of mutual interest, and the joint presentation of international academic papers.
Opening remarks were made by President Kim, who said “We hope to form a good partnership with the University of Queensland through this conference by successfully exchanging opinions on relevant issues, including joint research.” Professor Moore added, “I hope that we have active discussions on pressing environmental and health issues, including water quality control concerns such as water recycling and the control of POPs such as dioxins.”
The meeting achieved positive results in terms of the promotion of joint research and the exchange of academic and technological information, and is expected to contribute significantly to future developments in various health and environmental matters for both parties while simultaneously enhancing friendly relations.
