Gyeonggi Province will be taking part in sports exchanges with Utah, a US state that shares a sisterhood relationship with the province. Officials from the Gyeonggi will visit Utah from July 21 to July 29 this year. The aim of the exchanges is to improve cultural understanding and reinforce relations between the two regions.
Utah has had sisterhood ties with Gyeonggi Province for a long time. The province launched sports exchanges with Utah in 2007, based on an MOU for Sports Exchanges between the Gyeonggido Sports Council and the Utah Sports Commission. The sports exchanges have been made primarily in the area of Taekwondo, a Korean traditional martial art, and have been accompanied by diverse cultural exchanges between the two regions.
In 2007, youth athletes from Utah visited Gyeonggi Province. They visited a primary school located in the province, and developed friendships with young athletes from the province through a goodwill match. In 2008, an 18-member delegation including Happy Suwon Taekwondo Team members and officials from Gyeonggi Sports Council will visit Utah.
During the visit, the Taekwondo Team plans to visit Center Ville, Sandy, and Bountiful in Utah to demonstrate their diverse skills, including basic Taekwondo positions, pumsae (motions), and gyeokpa (breaking).
The province expects that Taekwondo will be promoted in the US and that the alliance between the two regions will be further expanded through the sports exchanges.
