The 5th World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea, which is being held until May 24, showcases a wide array of ceramic works, and is capturing the attention of the public.

The biennale includes the world’s most prestigious international ceramic art contest, an international contemporary ceramic exhibition that features famous global ceramic artworks under the theme of “the Adventure of Fire,” and a ceramic space & life exhibition that re-interprets the harmony of ceramics and interior design, attracting young visitors with unique exhibitions that break away from old stereotypes about ceramics.

“The Ceramic Space & Life” exhibition, in which a total of 65 domestic and foreign ceramic artists have installed 150 pieces, is a new type of exhibition combining ceramics and interior design that aims to re-interpret the relationship between ceramics and spaces. The exhibition gives the impression of a restaurant or a café with sophisticated interior design, and features works on architectural concepts expressed in water, fire, soil, wood, metal, and light.

The International Competition, which has been joined by 1,726 promising ceramic artists from 70 countries, provides visitors with an opportunity to see the big picture of the world of ceramics through the number of works submitted and their excellent quality. This year’s International Competition recorded the highest competition ratio and the largest number of participating countries in its history, gaining global attention. The reputation of the competition has attracted foreign as well as domestic visitors.

The pieces made by ceramic artists to express the concept of “Fire,” the most important factor defining the ceramic art, show diverse approaches. World Contemporary Ceramics – Adventures of the Fire” features a total of 94 contemporary ceramic works by 41 world-renowned artists.
