The Gyeonggi Provincial Government has hired a female immigrant in an international marriage in Korea as a public officer in charge of multicultural policies. In her position, she will work to establish and implement effective multicultural policies.

Through a special employment scheme that was initiated in June, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government hired Ms. Ariong (from Mongolia, 36 years old) as a contract public officer for Gyeonggi Province starting on August 3rd. The Gyeonggi Provincial Government has announced that she will be in charge of tasks related to assisting multicultural families at the Family and Women’s Policy Division.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Government chose to hire a female immigrant living in Korea in an international marriage as a public officer based on a belief that her background will be an asset to the multicultural policy division in helping them to develop efficient and appropriate policies on multiculturalism.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Government stated that Ms. Ariong married her Korean husband in 2002. They have two sons. She graduated from university in Mongolia with a Masters degree. In Korea, she worked for the 911 service for migrant women in Korea under the Ministry of Gender Equality for a year and a half, where she provided consulting and translation services. Through this experience, she learned of the difficulties experienced by many women who come to Korea through international marriages.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Government expects that Ms. Ariong will communicate frequently with other migrant women and help them to resolve conflicts arising from cultural differences in the course of marriage or settling down in Korea through lectures and more and help the Province to establish and execute multiculturalism-related policies.

Ms. Ariong will be trained as a public officer in August, and will start work in September. She will give lectures, offer advice, and provide translation services and other assistance at public institutions, companies, civic groups, etc. The Gyeonggi Provincial Government hopes that hiring Ms. Ariong will be a first step to creating more job opportunities for female immigrants who have settled in Korea through international marriages.
