Gyeonggi Province has signed an agreement pledging that it will actively respond to the issue of climate change by building a green economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Gyeonggi Province was the only Korean party to the treaty, which was also signed by representatives of local governments from around the world.
Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-Soo electronically signed the treaty with 36 leaders of local governments and UN officials at the Governors’ Global Climate Summit in Los Angeles, California (US), on October 2, 2009, and announced his willingness to build a green transportation system including GTX to promote the use of renewable energy sources through tidal power generation and wind power generation, and to design low-carbon green cities and create green industrial clusters, in order to address the issue of climate change.
The agreement signed by Governor Kim includes a promise of close partnerships between central and local governments to respond to climate change by freezing and reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. In detail, the declaration pledges the pursuit of clean transportation and logistics systems, the support of local governments for legislation related to climate change, the development of forestation initiatives, and the promotion of awareness of the role played by local governments in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
The Governors’ Global Climate Summit is the world’s largest gathering of local leaders focused on responding to climate change, and was attended by more than 1,200 participants from over 70 local governments. It is expected that this declaration will be presented at the 15th World Climate Conference, which will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December 2009. The participating countries will reflect the declaration in the negotiations and agreements of the Conference.
