A migration policy institute has been established in response to the growing number and significance of the foreign population in Korea.
The Migration Policy Institute, established jointly by the Justice Ministry and the International Organization for Migration, opened yesterday in the city of Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.
The opening ceremony was attended by Justice Minister Lee Kwi-nam, Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-soo, IOM legal affairs director Richard Perruchou and other delegates.
The institute, the first exclusive migration-related governmental organization to be set in Korea, will conduct in-depth research on Korean migration policies, embracing issues of marriage immigrants and illegal foreign workers.
It is to be supervised by the Justice Ministry and financially supported by Gyeonggi Province and Goyang City.
The institute will also go further to deal with pan-Asian migrational issues and thus promote regional peace and development, said officials.
The IOM is an intergovernmental organization established in 1951 to support the rights of international migrants. Korea joined it in 1988, prior to the Seoul Olympic Games.
