Two-Year Term of Validity for ESTA

Advantages Given to Application Prior to Paid Service Implementation

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) granted to electronic passport holders who stay in or visit the U.S. for less than 90 days will become a paid service from September 8.

According to the Gyeonggi Provincial Government’s press release of August 23, the Customs and Border Protection Office of the US Department of Homeland Security announced on August 6 that if a citizen of one of 36 countries (including South Korea) having a VISA exemption agreement with the U.S. applies for travel authorization through ESTA to visit the U.S., a charge of USD 14 will be levied from September 14, 2010 (US Eastern Time).

Payment for ESTA can be made by credit card (MasterCard, VISA, American Express, Discover) or a debit card during the application process.

Yi Gwan-Soo, head of the 24-365 Public Service Center of the provincial government, said that since the term of validity for ESTA is two years, provincial residents who plan to visit the U.S. within two years are recommended to apply for an ESTA before the paid service is installed.

Application for ESTA can be made through the VISA Exemption Program menu on the homepage of the US Embassy in Korea (Korean.seoul.usembassy.gov).
