Exports to Singapore, a Gateway to the Global Dining Industry
– Higher Quality than Malaysian Products, which Account for 99-Percent of the Singaporean Market
– More Competitive Pricing than Expensive Japanese Products
– Projected to Capture 23% of the Singaporean Market; Advantageous for Entry into the Global Market
Fresh eggs produced in Gyeonggi Province are now being exported to Singapore, a gateway to the global dining industry.
On May 20 the Gyeonggi Provincial Government received approved from the Singaporean Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) for annual export of as much as KRW 23 billion (approximately USD 20 million) worth of fresh eggs produced in Gyeonggi Province, and the first actual exports commenced early in September 2010.
Later this year, 3.3 million eggs are scheduled to be exported, accounting for just 2% of fresh eggs consumed in Singapore.
But the provincial government has confidence that its eggs are superior in quality to those Malaysian and have more competitive pricing than those of Japan, and thus predicts that Gyeonggi Province¢®?s market share will grow to 23% in the near future.
An official of the Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corporation said that Singapore is not large and so imports most agricultural products; as a result, it is recognized as a gateway of food materials for the dining industry. In addition, he mentioned that the entry of fresh Gyeonggi eggs to the Singaporean market is expected to open the way for the export of these eggs to overseas markets including Europe.
An official of the Gyeonggi Provincial Government explained that Singaporeans have shown high interest in the safety of products. Gyeonggi Province’s fresh eggs are free of antibiotics, colorants and spawning inducers and thus can meet Singaporean safety standards and be competitive in pricing.
The provincial government invited a group of Singaporean buyer last May, and passed AVA’s examination and a quarantine officer’s spot inspection in relation to salmonella and documentation with the help of the Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corporation.
In order to export fresh eggs to Singapore, it is necessary for farms and the distribution center to receive international certification such as HACCP. In addition, they should satisfy strict standards for the implementation and operation of a avian influenza prevention program in accordance with the international requirements.
Meanwhile, the provincial government plans to invite Singaporean buyers to an event to be held from September 25 to 28, 2010, for the purpose of commemorating the initial export of fresh eggs as well as to publicize their safety and superiority, and to send a press kit to Singaporean media.
The event will be attended by officials from Singapore’s Media Corporation (with 9 TV channels), a magazine publisher, a radio station and a website, NTUC media and large distribution companies and food material buyers.
They are scheduled to visit chicken farms and the distribution center, which is equipped with world-class facilities, and to attend a demonstration of Korean egg dishes, where they will join a luncheon together with Governor Kim Moon-Soo, the Singaporean ambassador to Korea and Korean journalists.
During the luncheon, Governor Kim will introduce Korean soy products and demonstrate the preparation of Korean egg dishes together with Han Yoon-Joo, President of Congdu Restaurant. Prior to the luncheon, the governor and the Singaporean ambassador will participate in a ceremony to commemorate the export.
