The provincial government has launched emergency drills and implemented its Untied Defense Conference with the participation of all provincial officials in response to the North Korean attack on Yeonpyeong Island on November 23rd. As of 6 p.m. on the day of the attack, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government had launched the United Defense Conference within its emergency safety headquarters on the 1st floor of the main building of the provincial government complex. Accompanying Governor Kim Moon-Soo in the emergency safety headquarters were key administrative and legislative officials as well as representatives of the National Intelligence Service in Gyeonggi Province, the Gyeonggi Provincial Police Department and other concerned agencies. The United Defense Conference is responsible for the assignment of labor and soldiers at hand, controlling citizens and traffic, providing medical support, reconstructing damaged facilities, maintaining security and more.
Governor Kim, who canceled his entire afternoon schedule and began the emergency response measures when the incident occurred, ordered, “Be sure to protect citizens living along the border and tighten security for the main facilities in the province.” He added, “Korea must repel and repay to the North’s belligerent provocations.”
