Gyeonggi Province will be expanding its IICC-covered categories to enhance its corporate technology competence.

The government has decided to increase the number of committee sectors from thirteen to seventeen by adding four more highly competitive industries with the Gyeonggi Institute of Science & Technology Promotion. Candidates can bid for the grants between the 4th and 23rd of May, 2011.

Newly added are the memory semiconductor, broadcasting and communications LED, and recycled materials industries, all of which are closely related to the seventeen ‘new growth engine’ industries designated by the central government for their considerable growth potential and market influence.

To become a host or a member of the committee, a company should have experience in cooperating with companies of the same or a related category, its own management policies and execution structure, and a recommendation from its local IICC.

Gyeonggi Province will screen the candidates through documentation to evaluate their future projects, management structure, and elements of specialization in order to select the appropriate companies.

The newly selected committee members will receive annual operating expenses. Participating companies registered with the committee will receive KRW 200 million over the course of two years for technical development.

The IICC is currently centered on the bio, new material, car parts, fabrics and nine other select industries. Over one thousand companies are registered under its name.

The committee has been fueling technical exchange and cooperation among member companies, developing new technologies and enhancing management efficiency.

Companies have received support from the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for the construction of an industrial-education cooperation network, and have laid economic bridges between local companies with the help of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. There is growing demand for further technical and financial support among local governments and industries that can benefit from IICC.

A government official stated that, “We want to extend the range of our program to government-designated new growth engine industries so our support can benefit companies based in Gyeonggi Province with government technology projects and contracts. It will certainly increase their competitive edge.”
