Goyang City, 39 districts to promote cultural diversity and acceptance
Goyang City (Mayor Choi Seong) and the Multicultural Family Support Center began a tour of all thirty-nine Community Service Centers in its district to promote cultural diversity and acceptance among residents from June to November.
The seminar was put together for each district’s Community Service Center, 1,024 local leaders, and members of the women’s association who work closely with residents. It presents real-life accounts of multicultural families and the realities they face in a video format.
Eleven speakers from eight different countries who immigrated to Korea by marriage, and who have been fully certified by the Multicultural Family Support Center, will also be introduced during the seminar. They will teach the participants how to greet, eat, and celebrate according to their cultures. Photos and videos have been prepared to further audience understanding.
The women come from Japan, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Uzbekistan and live here in Korea today. They will be dressed in their traditional costumes during the seminar so the audience can experience different cultures first-hand.
A city official stated, “We wanted this seminar to be a chance for local residents to accept multicultural families as part of their community by emphasizing harmony and unity. Our goal was to undo any underlying prejudices about multicultural families.”
