Gyeonggi Province Creates Cultural Treasure Island with College Students
(June 23, 2011)
Gyeonggi Province is hosting the “Gyeonggi Culture Treasure Island Season 2” project on Jebu Island,
dispatching college exploration groups and artists to “explore and redesign” the island this July.
Gyeonggi Province will host the “Gyeonggi Cultural Treasure Island Season 2” in July with the participation of enthusiastic college students. The selected students will form “expedition teams” divided into exploration members and artists, and will redecorate the island with their expertise for two months starting in July 2011.
This event was first prepared a year ago to promote tourism to the west coast islands. The 2010 event focused on Gukhwa Island of Hwaseong City as well as Pung and Yuk islands of Ansan City. This year’s event will be held on Jebu Island, Gyeonggi Province’s most prominent tourist attraction, in the hope that more people will come and visit the beautiful island.
– The expedition will explore the hidden island
First, the “Treasure Island Expedition” will search for college students who are interested in PR, photography, and journalism, and then transport the selected members to the island to explore the area and formulate original promotion articles.
They will interview local residents and tourists to identify the hidden cultural treasures of Jebu Island and update them through Internet blogs, SNS and other media channels. They will also research the island’s history and regional legends.
The government expects to shed new light on previously unknown aspects of Jebu Island, including its coastal walk, the legend of Maebawi Rock, and Jebu Beach.
– The art team will work on wall paintings and more on Jebu Island.
The Sang-sang Art Team, composed entirely of art majors, will be in charge of decorating the island to enhance its appeal. They will reorganize disordered signs, restore damaged tourist facilities, and seek out potential tourist attractions that are as yet unknown. They will also be responsible for producing promotional goods to advertise the newly discovered resources.
An up-and-coming amateur artist will also be involved in this year’s event, attracting more interest from the public.
Jebu Island is the only place in Korea that reveals a path to a nearby island during low tide, recalling the miraculous parting of the Red Sea by Moses. The beach, located near the bustling capital city, is always busy with tourists during the weekend. Unfortunately, most tourists drop by to visit the restaurants and other facilities rather than enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.
An island official remarked, “I hope that the college students can come up with unique ways to promote the island. I also hope that the public will see that Jebu Island has so much more to offer than a day trip to the beach.”
The cultural treasure island project will begin on July 1 with an orientation event.
A government official said, “This represents a great opportunity for both the island and the young students because it could bring out the best of their potential. I hope the event brings more tourists to Jebu Island.”
