Gyeonggi Province’s Korea Beauty Design Expo 2011 (Budex) will run from October 28 to 30 for three days under the theme ‘Beauty is Design.’

In the morning of the 8th of August Governor Kim Moon-Soo, currently serving as the head of the Budex committee, held a meeting with twenty-eight board members at the new city hall annex, alongside the committee vice-chairman Kim Deak-Seong (also chairman of the Korea Beauty Industry Society), Professor Lim Chang-Yeong  of the KAIST Culture Technology Graduate School, and thirty other beauty industry giants, to discuss the upcoming Budex for the first time.

Governor Kim handed out an official letter of appointment to all twenty-nine committee members and took group pictures to mark the event. In his opening speech he promised unlimited support to the industry, remarking: “Those of you sitting here today have worked hard to beautify Korea and to have its beauty products recognized throughout the world. We want to heighten awareness among our people to meet new and heightened expectations. Our goal is to become an international powerhouse in beauty products.”

Governor Kim also added that “Each and every one working in the beauty industry has worked hard to make Korea’s beauty technology what it is today. With this year’s expo we want to make these efforts more organized so we can support the entire industry at the governmental level.”

Celebrating its 3rd anniversary this year, Budex will be held in the fourth exhibition hall of Kintex. KRW 350 million in funds has been set aside for the event, which will feature not only exhibitions but also a wide range of performances, seminars, and contests. Many institutes and academies will work together with beauty related groups to create a synergy effect.

The Gyeonggi Tourism Organization and local companies have joined forces to attract tourists from Southeast Asia to add an international touch to beauty services, makeup, and Gyeonggi Province specialty items, and to expand its global reach.

On the 28th, the first day of the event, there will be an opening ceremony at Kintex¡¯ 1st exhibition gallery, where the beauty design award will be given to the celebrity with the best makeup, nail art, and hair, as well as a beauty jewelry exhibition, a beauty culture festival, and pieces created by college graduates. There will be plenty to see for anyone who is interested in beauty.

There will be a theme exhibition at the hall no.4 of the 1st exhibition gallery introducing Gyeonggi Province’s successful policies on beauty and design, as well as sections dedicated to beauty experiences, hair, makeup, and nail art exhibits, and company booths and educational courses. The fair will take place in a total of seven buildings fitted with 200 to 300 booths for browsing.

A contest for hair styling, henna art, nail art, and makeup will also be held, the winners of which will be presented with an award by the Governor, the Ministy, and the Budex committee.

MBC and SBS Beauty Academy and Hair Designer Park June will be present at the event to give lectures aimed at high school students, college students, and those who are already working in the industry.

Fifty-five companies participated in Budex 2010, attracting 31,000 visitors to 268 booths. It also hosted seventy contests in seven categories. The event was said to have shown the true potential of Korea’s beauty industry, attracting considerable interest from the public.

Korea’s local beauty industry has grown from KRW 3.4 trillion in 2005 to KRW 4.586 trillion in 2007, marking growth of 19%. It is forecast to reach KRW 6.8 trillion by the year 2013.
