The Eulji Exercise, a training exercise for national emergencies, marks its 43rd anniversary this year. Civilians, government officials, and the army join together each year to defend the nation.
This year’s training period from the 16th to the 19th of August saw the participation of more than 3,800 administrative officials from cities, counties, and districts as well as 400,000 representatives of important civilian businesses. In Gyeonggi Province, city and county-related facilities and 174 designated companies took part in the drill with a total of 25,000 participants.
An armored vehicle was parked to the rear of Gyeonggi Province’s new annex building. It will be on display for public viewing until the conclusion of the Eulji Excercise on the 19th of August.
To mark the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, this year’s exercise will be intensified following the ROKS Cheonan (PCC-772) sinking, the G20 Summit, and recent developments between North and South Korea.
Wartime setup training, budgeting and financing were undertaken for the first time. Civilians, officials, and the military joined together to evacuate residents living near the border and, led by the People’s Coalition for Energy, practiced blackouts. There was also a random civilian emaciation drill. To prepare for November’s G20 Summit, civilians, officials, and military officials also participated in anti-terrorist training at KINTEX.

Governor Kim Moon-soo, who participated in the anti-terrorist drill at the Daehan Oil Pipeline Corporation, said, “It was the largest, broadest, and most realistic training I have ever witnessed. We must remember that we are able to live our lives in safety thanks to these great people who dedicate their lives to their country.”
