Samulnori is usually performed by four percussionists. However, Goyang of Gyeonggi Province will hold a giant Pungmulmadang performance with the participation of 2011 people October.

The Gyeonggi Arts Center announced on September 16 that it will hold a festival under the theme of ‘Shaking Heaven and Earth’ at the Goyang Eoulrim Nuri Byeolmuri Sports Arena at 5 p.m. on October 3 to wish for the successful hosting of the 92nd Goyang National Sports Festival.

Under the supervision of Samulnori Master Professor Kim Duk-soo of the Korea National University of Arts, 2011 Korean traditional percussionists – players of the janggu(hourglass-shaped drum), jing (gong), buk (drum), and kkwanggwari (small gong) – will participate in the giant pungmul courtyard performance.

The performers will come from all over Korea, including Seoul, Chungcheong-do, Gyeongsang-do, Jeolla-do, and Gangwon-do, as well as from 31 cities and guns in
the Gyeonggi region, to participate in the event. Jo Jan-hui (19), who suffers from hydrocephalus, and Ddamddi, members of the pungmuldan troupe of Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, will also take part in the event. Samulnori is usually performed by a group composed of four percussionists, but for this event, 500 groups will perform the samulnori in a bid to break the Guinness World Record.

With the start of the gilnori (street performance), various musical performances and techniques will be presented on a large scale.

Promotion staff Im Seon-mi of the Gyeonggi Arts Center said, “A large-scale performance group will play Korean traditional musical instruments loud enough to shake heaven and earth. Visitors are sure to have an unforgettable experience “. (+82-31-289-6421~4)
