KINTEX’s 2nd exhibition hall opened on September 28th following the completion ceremony. It is now the largest trade exhibition hall in Korea.
Construction work began on March 2009 with a budget of KRW 345 billion and was completed two years and nine months later. The investment came from Gyeonggi Province, Goyang City, and KOTRA.
Six years after the opening of KINTEX on April 2005, it has become the largest exhibition hall in Korea and the 4thlargest in Asia with the opening of its annex building.
The exhibition space, which spans an area equivalent to fifteen soccer fields, will host the Ministry of Knowledge Economy’s Global Top Exhibition and other prestigious international exhibitions in the future.
The completion ceremony was attended by Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-soo, Knowledge Economy Minister Choi Joong-kyung, Goyang City Mayor Choi Seong, KOTRA President Hong Suk-woo, and KINTEX President & CEO Lee Han-chul along with one thousand guests.
Governor Kim said in his opening speech: “Congratulations to KINTEX on the opening of the second exhibition hall. KINTEX will play a large role in North and South Korean affairs. Being so close to Incheon International Airport and the Gyeongin Canal, the possibilities are truly endless. The central government must accelerate construction of the next-generation bullet train, GTX, and form a hotel cluster in the vicinity to provide an extra boost.”
Now KINTEX has total floor space of 108,049 square meter, 11,676 suqre meter of which is dedicated to conferences, making it two times the size it was before construction work began. It is three times the size of the second largest exhibition hall, COEX, and 27,000 square meter larger than Japan’s largest exhibition facility, Big Site.
KINTEX is the 4th largest exhibition hall in Asia following those in China, Singapore, and Thailand, all of which cover over 100,000 square meter. According to 2009 UFI standards KINTEX comes in 5th largest in Asia.
The second exhibition hall is on par with the greatest exhibition convention centers in the world.
The display system and solar power generation save KRW 1 billion a year in energy expenditures as well as cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 4,000 tons. It can withstand an earthquake of up to 6.5 magnitude with its pillar-free design.
According to KINTEX’s internal analysis, its economic effect will amount to KRW 11.8 trillion by 2015, less than five years after the renovation project. It will also generate KRW 5.1 trillion in production, KRW 2 trillion in income, and KRW 380 billion in tax revenues, as well as the employment of 100,000 people.

It is expected that local conventions will become larger in scale with the opening of the second exhibition hall.
After celebrating the completion of construction work, KINTEX will host the 1st Korea Industry Convention and the 1stIndustry Fusion Week events.
The 2011 Korea Industry Convention is Korea’s largest event, combining the Korea Machinery Fair, Korea Metal Week, Seoul International Tool Exhibition, Seoul International Electric Fair, Korea International Plastic & Rubber Show, and the Korea International Printing Machinery & Equipment Show. Taking up 102,431§³ of exhibition space, and involving 1,660 companies from thirty-eight nations worldwide, the festival will run October 1 in both exhibition halls.
The 1st Industry Fusion Week event consists of conferences, exhibitions, and technique seminars focused on finding ways to create new industries by combining already existing technologies.
Futurist and Millennium Project director Jerome Glenn, Hyosung Advisor Seong Chang-mo, and Virginia Tech Robotics Professor Denise Hong are among the speakers.
The Seoul International Manufacturing Technology Show (100,000 square meter) and the International Food Industry Exhibition (80,000 square meter) have expanded their exhibition space dramatically and plan to host further exhibitions next year. The Seoul Motor Show and the Korea Electronics Show are also contemplating expanding their exhibitions.
Between three and five select full-scale conventions with international competence will be developed with the opening of the second exhibition hall, while promising exhibitions will receive ample support to further develop the exhibition industry in Korea.
To reverse the shortage of hotels near KINTEX, the local government will attract more hotel operations to Hallyu World.
A 370-room hotel is being built within Hallyu World by Daemyung Leisure Industry and scheduled for completion in June of 2013. This June, Inter-Burgo Group signed a contract to build a 380-room hotel and Hainan Airlines of China signed an MOU to build a hotel with 1,600 guestrooms.
To improve traffic conditions, the GTX lines between Dongtan and KINTEX will be prioritized over other sectors.
A Gyeonggi Province official said, “Our plan is to form a tourist, accommodation, shopping, and entertainment complex around the exhibition convention center. The Gyeonggi Convention Bureau is doing its best to attract various international shows.”
– Governor Kim, Minister Choi, Mayor Choi, KOTRA President Hong, and KINTEX President Lee all shook hands to celebrate the special event. (GNews Plus)
